msconfig and Avast

Boot up on my machine has slowed down due to bloody AVAST anti virus flagging up I need to upgrade, takes it awhile to get its act together and do its thing on the screen meanwhile I have to sit twiddling me thumbs.
Now then if I go to msconfig and deselect avast on start up soon as I click "apply" the dammed thing ticks itself again,I do not seem to be able to disable Avast in startup, wish I had never downloaded the bloody thing?
Any ideas?,deleting avast caused all sorts of problems last time I did it,any other way of stopping the dammed thing?
Oh yes near forgot running WIN7 Home Premium 64 bit

Try opening the avast program then settings> troubleshooting and untick 'the self defence' mode, you should then be ably to disable it in the start menu. (you may need to do a restart first)

If you disable avast then your AV protection wil stop....

There seems to be a problem at the moment with the update to version 7.0.1.456 not completing properly, with it making the machine hang at startup

I've found the best way round it appears to be to go to Control panel > programs & features (or add/remove programs depending on windows version) and then use the add/remove feature to REPAIR the program
Reboot, give it a few minutes to update and sort itself out and it starts behaving again
Its important that you don't uninstall Avast in an attempt to fix it, as that screws up registry and file/folder permissions well and truly, stopping reinstallation. I've yet to find a way round that, and from Avasts replies to my questions, nor have they
