Unfocused photo

Is it possible to digitally enhance an out of focus photo? I took a great photo of friends but the %^&*er is slightly out of focus.... I want to enlarge it and give it to them as a gift but....

suggestions please.

Cheers

You could use a sharpen tool, although that does kinda show thick bold lines, but its still worth a try on Photoshop or Paint.net :ok:

What photo editing software do you have access to?

It's a difficult job to make a significant difference that will help an enlargement. Localised sharpening of eyes, teeth and the texture of clothing can help - that's the stuff with details.

If you have software that supports layers and/or a 'filter' call high pass a better result can be achieved but there are no miracles. Additionally two weak runs of the high pass filter generally is more effective than a single blast at high strength.

How out of focus is it? Any chance you could post a copy (cropping so it's doesn't identify your friends)?

If you haven't a good photo to work with, you are very limited to what you can do, and occasionally trying to improve just makes things worse.
Sure, you can use the unsharp mask, and various other tools, but it is limited.

Additionally, if you plan on enlarging, all it does is emphasise the er, not so good bits! Remember the 300dpi too.

You have nothing to lose by giving something like this a try...
