duplicate emails - HELP!

My other half has been experiencing duplicate emails for a while now. We have pressed our mail host company and they have spent time investigating and have come to the conclusion that it is an interaction between the mailtool (Eudora) and our antivirus/firewall (AVG and Zone Alarm) that is to blame. There seems to be no common feature between the emails that come in twice (the majority!) and the few that don't in terms of attachments/embedded links/picture content or source etc. If it was just duplicate emails it would be bad enough but Eudora automatically detaches attachments and saves them thus two copies (or more) get saved which also need deleting.

The issue is seen on 50 or 60 emails most days, sometimes more.

We are running XP SP3 on a good powerful machine, as far as I can see it is not caused by an obvious timeout with the fetching causing duplicates to be fetched before deleting from the server.

Any pointers will be gratefully received.

A couple of ideas, but you've probable seen them already:

Multiple/duplicate messages being received

Duplicate Email downloading

Thanks for that, green granite, but it doesn't seem to be either of those causes. As far as we can be sure, the Eudora settings have not been changed since long before the issue arose (about 2 months ago) but AVG and Zone Alarm have both up issued in the time.

Do you leave a copy of emails on the server?

Can you backup your Eudora mail data and uninstall/re-install?

Does this happen for all profiles (I assume that more than one user can use Eudora).

Have you tried replicating this with another client - e.g. Outlook Express?

Can you replicate it with Eudora and gmail / hotmail?

At some point you presumably did not have this issue. Is it possible to trace what has changed in the interim to start this happening? Updated / new firewall, updates to Eudora, new versions of AV / Malware etc. etc.?

With Eudora, close it down, browse the underlying file structure and rename the *.toc file to *.old. This is the Table Of Contents, and it's function is there to index the other associated mailbox file (which contains the emails themselves).

You will lose the read/unread nature of the email, but it should reduce/remove the duplication issues encountered.

(note: this support information is 15 years old, and as such they may have changed the product since I supported it, so the usual caveats apply).

mmm, food for thought here, thanks.

1) mails are not left on the server.

2) only one profile (user) on this installation.

3) we (she) has not tried another client, would rather not as it will lead to a discontinuous inbox on display.

4) we could try backing up and re-installing Eudora.

5) it may have gone wrong at the beginning of the year when she had a problem with 3 months mail disappearing into a different "recovery" file.

6) today, my thunderbird mail browser has started bringing 2 copies of some mails in, at different times. This may be a red herring as it has been going "not responding" and locking up the filing system on my Vista machine this week. Mouse and screen saver work but nothing else until a hard reset has been done.

MB I'll try this later, when the machine is not in use, Ta.
