New Computer and iTunes and Apps
 

Hi all,

I would really appreciate some advice on the following please?

I live in Australia and am looking at buying a new computer in the near future. Due to (unfortunate) family circumstances my kids and I are moving in with my Father.

Is there a relatively simple way for me to transfer my iTunes (and my kids apps) to a completely new computer? There are lots of both to transfer!

Any advice gratefully received thankyou.

Use a USB portable hard drive to move the stuff. If you have a large capacity Ipod that can work too.

Google "Move Itunes To New Computer" to get the steps necessary to move the library files(containing your music tags) as well as the music itself.

Moving the applications is a different matter, however. [Nearly] always they will need a fresh install: Windows needs to know where everything is for a start, and just about everything calls on 'bits of Windows' to make them work. (Just I've assumed you have a windows computer... don't speak Apple, but I bet there are similar constraints.) So, if you can get hold of the original install disks that's pretty important.

I'm assuming a Windows PC, here.

If your new PC and old PC are not too different, you could try cloning your old hard disk and putting it in the new PC, then running a windows repair and installing the new drivers.

Specifically, I think you would have to move to the same type of processor (intel-intel or AMD - AMD), the same type of HDD (IDE - IDE or SATA-SATA), and the same graphics card (e.g. nVidia - nVidia), and preferably the same chipset for the clone to be successful.

Basically, if you can get Windows to load at all, even in safe mode, you should be able to install the correct drivers for the new hardware.

You would need to know what you were about to tackle it, though. And having a spare hard disk to test the cloning with would be a good idea.

If you have (or can get) a hard disk equal to or larger than your existing, and can get hold of Ghost or Acronis (or similar) to clone an image and you have the original Windows installation media and you have downloaded all the drivers for the new PC and put them onto a CD, it is probably worth a try.

At worst you will have made a backup of your existing HDD, and at best you will have transferred all your apps and music (relatively) painlessly.

BTW, I have successfully transferred images to non-identical PCs, but they do need to be pretty similar for it to work.

Oh yes - you may need to re-register Windows. :hmm:

I would have thought that when all your apps are working on your phone, then a clean install of itunes on a new computer is all you need. When you pair the iphone with the new computer then they should sync together.

I've just gone through a complete new restore with my 3gs iphone at the Apple shop in Birmingham. The technician found a corrupt app that was causing the phone to freeze and not sync with itunes. He suggested when reinstalling apps to do them 3 at a time to esure that there are no corrupt ones. I did this (even though it took forever) and found the corrupt app. All is ok now.

That should do it. You now will have the App in question on both iPhones, and it should work perfectly. Again, this is similar to the music purchased on the iTunes store and will only work on up to 5 other computers.
