Missing memory in Dell Inspiron 1520?

It seems to imply that there was only 1gig as of new. Surely, this would never have been acceptable with Vista...would it?

Mate here in England has the above laptop that is really crawling. Basically useless. It's showing 1gig.

Running Vista - with grand-daughter's multiple downloads to cope with.:ugh::ugh: (I think she started downloading things at about age one.)


Can Dell ever have put that out with one gig? I don't want to pull it around any more than is necessary so anyone know which of the labelled panels C D etc., is that one that contains the memory? It's my intention to simply re-seat the existing strips as I have little time left here.

Yes they can, and they have done sometimes.

Easiest way to check is to get the service tag from the underside of the machine and plug it into the warranty status checker on the Dell website:

Dell System Information / Dell Warranty Extensions & Upgrades / Dell Warranty Status

If you then click the tab marked "Original System Configuration", you'll be able to see what RAM Dell shipped with it.

It was a 'freebie', with I think, an AOL deal, so I guess they would have paired back the cost of hardware.

Despite being a Luddite, my pal has got on reasonably well with it, so it must be exceptionally burdened by dross at the moment. I've run CCleaner and it helped, but he'll have to get someone to restore or reload (hushed tones) Vista, unless they can go right though the items weighing it down.

The avaiable memory this AM was 0 for a lot of the time. First time I've ever seen that happen.

Upping the RAM is a very simple thing to do. Crucial do an on-line scanner which will tell what can be fitted and how much - very good company RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com . I would also run Windowz defrag tool - that can speed things up a bit.
