Log On Problem
Hello Everyone,
I have a small snag this am. I switched on the PC and when I logged on it didn't come up with my personal settings and show me my desktop. Instead it created a temporary account with my username with, of course, none of the data and shortcuts that I have built up over the years. All my files are still there as I am able to get at them through My Computer>Local Disc>Documents and Settings>Own Folder which is how I have logged on here today. It's a slow process. I'm running WindowsXP home. What I have done so far is to reboot the PC several times, log off and log on through another account (my daughter's) which works normally, delete the temporary folders for the temporary user account which was created in my username and try again. On clicking on my user account it appeared to work normally initially but my own desktop didn't appear and another temporary account was created. Can anyone offer an idea of what could be wrong and how I might fix it? |
Sounds like your User Profile is corrupt.

This same thing happened to me. I went through many troubleshooting steps and I concluded that it was an update that was corrupted. I removed all recent updates and they updated again correctly.

Thanks for the input both of you. I found "User File Corrupt" via Google which led me to Windows Vista Repair | Vista Repair | Online Computer Repair and an article entitled "User File Corrupt in XP" and did a system restore through the safe mode as recommended. It worked! So far.......
