Reading S.M.A.R.T. results over a network?
My NAS sits in the garage roof void inside a very large plastic box. I've done this to keep moisture, dust, and creepy crawlies out whilst still giving heat a good chance to dissipate; power consumption of the NAS is low, and whilst no new air can circulate to aid cooling, the large box should radiate heat nicely.
Sure enough, this morning I smiled when I saw the nice square of perfectly melted snow on the garage roof, directly above where the NAS sits! :) Come warmer weather however I would like to keep an eye on operating temperature and whilst the obvious thing to do is to stick my wireless remote thermometer probe inside the box and monitor the result from the kitchen, my desire for little projects had another idea; the two HDDs in the NAS and the USB HDD plugged in to the NAS are all SMART enabled, so monitor HDD temperature via the network. The problem is that I have been unable to find any freeware or "low cost ware" that will allow me to do this. The NAS is a Western Digital MyBook World Edition II running BusyBox on Linux. Recommendations, please? TVM, XV |
Monitoring Hard Disks with SMART
"The remaining part of the smartmontools package is the smartd dæmon that does regular monitoring for you. It monitors the disk's SMART data for signs of problems. It can be configured to send e-mail to users or system administrators or to run arbitrary scripts if problems are detected." :ok: Mac |
There's a lot you can do with the MyBook World models. Most of them can be found here: Hacking WD MyBook World Ed .
The "first steps" page goes in to setting up a SSH server on it, and after thatyou can run all kinds of things on it: just return the results of commands, set up schedules with cron, or even set up a temperature monitoring webpage on it. :8 |
TVM, both. :)
After easyJet just cancelled my EMA-PRG flight yet again I now have an enforced Christmas in the UK and longer to spend on little projects! XV |
