DVD/CD write problems
 

I hope some feather plucker out there can help me with this one.
My dvd/cd will read ok but none of my write softwares can find the drive to write.I have Nero,Roxio,and VOB.
I purchased a new drive and have exactly the same result.
I am running XP Home.
If I go control panel/system/Hardware/Device Manager/DVD/cd-ROM drives
there are two items
1) CD-Rom Drive
2) DVD_fcs DVD-ROM_fcs 7040 SCSI CdROM Device

Its 2) which I believe is the problem and I don't Know what it means.
If I try to uninstall that line in the devive manager I get the dreaded BLUE SCREEN and have to reboot.
I am not a total idiot with computers I do build my own, grandsons, and my company units, but this has got me stumped
Help please.

It's possibly a Nero image drive try typing MSCONFIG at the command prompt and see if if is called up in the start menu, if so disable it, and restart.

Done that and I can uninstall line 2) without getting the blue screen but the line
reappears on reboot and the write softwares still cannot see the dvd drive.
Checked msconfig and no ticks have reappeared.

Have you tried downloading and installing imgburn The Official ImgBurn Website

After installing it should allow you to see what the drives that are shown are capable of. It also allows you to select different drivers to access them.

I'm struck by the number of burning apps. Have you considered losing one or more of them & trying again?

Have you installed both versions of the packet writing software that comes shipped with Nero and Roxio (InCD and DragToDisc) - if so then that could well be your problem.

Much like having 2 anti-virus packages running at the same time, you are asking for trouble.

InCD and DragtoDisc come via the installs of Roxio and Nero, they don't have seperate entries IIRC, so there is a good chance they have been deleted by removing those.

I just tend to use free software anyways :)

I ran into a problem with Nero not supporting an replacement DVD drive that I plugged in to an older PC. Worked fine with the old CD burner, but not the new DVD RW drive.

OK, it was an old version of Nero (version 4, IIRC), and I was able to find a free copy of a somewhat later version (6.6) on a magazine cover CD that supports the drive and does the necessary. I found that Nero does publish a list of supported drives for its products.

I still use ImgBurn a lot when working with ISO images and I have no problem with coexistence.

Incidentally, I still find that make and model of CD / DVD burner can have an effect on whether a drive works with a given software package, even when it "shouldn't" make any difference. For example, I have a Pioneer and a Sony DVD-RW in one PC. Both work fine with ImgBurn, but only the Sony works with Nero. The Pioneer seems to work, but never actually writes anything. Fortunately, it doesn't render the CD / DVD unusable, so no harm done (apart from wasted time).

That would have been due to an OEM version of Nero.

Old versions were tied to the OEM hardware they were sold with so a Sony copy would only work with Sony drives, an LG version only with LG etc.

ImgBurn tends to be a happy soul that doesn't have problems interacting with any other software :) The newest version has a lot of nice features too. Well worth donating for it.

Cor, I wish I'd been told that a year or so ago. Caused endless hours of re-booting, re-installing and Anglo-Saxon encouragement.

Ok everybody I am Burning again, but the strange line is still their, I can uninstall it but it reappears on reboot.

I have deleted Nero,Roxio, and VOB Instant CD/DVD.
I have checked the files have been deleted.
I have checked msconfig- not ticked.
I have edited the register so that none of the deleted software is mentioned,
(that was a long job, Nero takes over the computer.)
So does any one have any suggestions what it is. Not so urgent now I am burning again.

CC Cleaner is good, might help clean out bits of the registry you may have missed.

CCleaner can be a bit too good if you don't take care with what you allow it to delete.

Having to log in everywhere is one symptom of getting it wrong.

OK everybody I found it, It was a software called VirtualDrive which I have used occationally now deleted, many thanks everyone

Frosty, cc cleaner is just fine. if you can't be bothered to acquaint yourself with the options...

Which is precisely the point I was making.

You mean if you let it clear out the cookies for sites that require you to log on.

The other thing with installing ccleaner is the fact it defaults to trying to install the yahoo toolbar o n setup.

As do lots of freebie software installs. One click & you're away. it does pay to actually look at what's being asked of you when installing software, just as it pays to suss out how to use it before pressing the button. Sin in haste, repent at leisure:)
