Reading DVD-R mini discs

Hi Gents,

I borrowed my friends mini disc video recorder that use 8cm DVD-R discs. The recordings came out OK and can be played on his DVD video disc recorder, but neither my computer or DVD player can read them, I've got a very new computer and two DVD drives that i'm pretty sure can read all formats.

Can someone help please as I want to copy them to my hard drive and put on a normal DVD (converting as necessary)

Thanks again

Keith

Were the recordings finalised?

Keith Discovering 20th October 2008 07:20

THanks for the reply Frostie. I don't think they were finalised, whatever it means :{. They're only write once disks, but it wasn't my recorder and I assume they weren't.

Does that mean i can't use the recordings unless i 'finalise' on his machine, or can i use another recorder to do it? Sorry, but i'm a bit dull on this stuff!

Thanks again

K

Is there a way of connecting the camera to the PC via FireWire or USB?

There's software called cdroller that will probably pull the files off the DVDs, but it's not free. There may be other solutions.

If it can be read in a DVD recorder, that recorder should be able to finalise it. There should be an option somewhere in the disc menu to finalise the disc. It's the same with set-top DVD recorders - they can play unfinalised recordings but the disc needs to be finalised to play in another player.

Depends on the make of camera and how the footage was recorded, not all record in DVD file type structure, make and model might help?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I downloaded cdroller and it's great software, but it can't read the disk. I wonder if this is because the disc itself is half sized (mini DVD) in a normal computer DVD read writer? I'll also try in a DVD player but I'm away on a trip and will update you when i'm home.

i really appreciate your replies though

cheers
Keith
