sprtcmd.exe

Have trawled internet for solution with no success.
When I attempt to switch off my computer I am always left with sprtcmd.exe which says is still running I then have to end prog to shut down. Any suggestions how to get rid of prog or problem. I gather it is part of Dell support programe but having removed Dell Support 3-2-1 programme with no sucess am scared to proceed to remove other Dell programes. No recent downloads and all ops normal. Grateful thanks in advance .

There are three ways that this can be loaded at startup - as a service, from the registry or from the Startup folder.

If it's a service, open Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services, then find the Dell service and set it to disabled and stop the service.

If it is loaded by the registry:

Start > Run then type regedit. Then navigate to the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\current Version\Run, then delete the key with sprtcmd.exe.

Of course, the file might simply be loaded from the Startup Folder in either All Users or your account, in which case just got to C : \Documents and Settings\All Users (or your user)\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and remove the shortcut.

You can also use msconfig (Start > Run then type msconfig) to do these, but this often results in a raft of prompts telling you that such and such is disabled and do you want to re-enable it.

Computer Management: right click My Computer (XP) > select Manage.

HKLM = HKey_Local_Machine

A very good app that detects a vast array of startup programs and also has the ability to disable and/or remove them is autoruns.
If you run it with "hide signed microsoft entries" option enabled, you should find it easier to search for the startup item you are looking for.

All sorted many thanks for quick help. For any others with same problem and are not too computer literate from memory here's how I did it:
hold down ctrl, alt and delete - this brings up the task manager. in the the manager you'll see a processes tab - click on that. Click on the 'image name' title - that'll sort everything in alphabetical order. Now look for sprtcmd.exe, highlight it by clicking it then click 'end process' - it should now be killed.

Now go to control panel and add/ remove programs. find the program in the list (i think its just called 'dell support tool') and click remove, then reboot. it should be removed. Goodbye dell support which I haven't used anyway http://static.pprune.org/images/info...ons/icon14.gif
