IE6 Now Available From Microsoft.
 

Don't know exactly how long it has been there, but just noticed that the IE6 is now available from the Microsoft products Update Site, NOT the preview but the full version, IF you want it......

I didn't say that I recommended downloading it, I have not yet, and don't intend to for now, I agree with you in that I am not changing just because it is out, I was just letting anyone that is interested know that the full release, not a beta version, is now available.

There was a thread here some time ago that said the beta version had conflicts with some other things, including from memory parts of PPRuNe? I also read somewhere that you may have problems with some secure sites like internet banking etc?

Anyone know any more???????

Just for interest. I have been using IE6 for some 3 months and don't have any problems to mention. I also find it better than IE5, and certainly more stable.

There were some problems with the beta, or public preview, version. Just wondered if anyone has installed the full release IE6 yet, and if so how is it?

Just downloaded and installed it (after reading this thread) Had a system feeze up when i disconnected from the internet, but that could well have been me/finger trouble.
It seems to be a bit more colourful than the last interface. I believe it's been around a while now though so hopefully most of the glitches are ironed out. One thing i did notice that i like is, when you go to , control panel> internet options ,it gives you the choice/button to delete cookies and temp.files. with the last version i found that if i wanted to bin any cookies out of the Temp.I-net Files folder i had to do it manually via my computer> c:drive> windows.....
Not had any problems with it this 'sitting' so I'd say give it a try.

Just that I had a lot of trouble when I first upgraded to IE5.5, and I heard there were a lot of problems with the beta/trial version of IE6?

Might "await further reports" as we say.....

For cleaning up after browsing, using IE I use a little facility called Windows Washer which you can get from http://www.webroot.com

If you are worried about privacy - ie the things that cookies do to spy on you, then I recommend you upgrade to IE 6, and then....

Change the privacy policy to prompt you before allowing 3rd party cookies, and then delete all existing cookies.

You will be amazed at the 3rd party sites.

IB4 onwards can prompt you to accept/deny cookies. Beware, if you set to prompt then you might find yourself forever accepting or rejecting the cookie!

Not so with IE 6. You can set the options to accept all first hand cookies - ie the ones from the sites you are knowingly visiting - but reject or prompt for 3rd party ones - these are usually the spy type ones. Also, when you get a prompt for one of the known ad sites, you can specify that your reply to the prompt will be remembered and applied to all other cookies from this site without a further prompt.

Just one issue I have noticed with IE6, I never noticed it with IE5. When the cache is cleared, a file called index.dat remains and cannot be deleted. The only way to delete this file is to open up ms-dos prompt when IE is closed and delete it.
This particular file logs every web address that you visit etc
Particually handy for those spying bosses monitoring your internet activities

Surmount - us bosses use something a bit more sophisticated than that! We use reports from proxy servers and Websense.

The index.dat file was in the cookies folder in IE5.5 and i'm sure it was there in IE5.
BTW, I've been using IE6 for 3 days now inconjuction with Win 98se, BT homehighway and BT anytime can't really say i've noticed any difference a few extra's and no problems ...so far. i've been on and off the net loads of times aswell.
