IP address tracing
I can find the server from the IP address, but is there anyway I can find the inividual from an IP address?
|
Not really. Although there are some cunning devices for narrowing it down a lot...

AFAIK, The ISP is the only person who can help trace an IP# to the user.
IF, I needed to trace this idiot, the logs at the ISP would tell me exactly who this was. They need to know to the second when the email or whatever was sent. eg; Trace IP address of sender 210.54.201.7 -> 210-54-201-7.dialup.xtra.co.nz Date : Sun, 16 Apr 2000 23:41:56 +0000 Domain : UHWFWRESTLING.COM Submitter: Jacobs, Dwanye Email : [email protected] Email2 : [email protected] OrgName : UHWF Index Address : 34 st stewart Road : Sydney : Australia : 32435 : UK Dayphone : (07) 5556 120 Evephone : +(90) 5757 23419 Mobile : +025 276 32812 Fax : + =========================== This idiot has tried to make out that he's in Oz.......... and gave a dud credit card number. This is the most important line; Date : Sun, 16 Apr 2000 23:41:56 +0000 This looks to me like some kid in NZ having a boring Sunday, judging by the ridiculous info provided. I hope this helps. blackie |
Try this handy site for tracing if you don't run Neotrace. http://www.checkdomain.com

Contact the ISP and hope that they disclose this information, or even store it at all.
Freeserve etc. doesnt log callers numbers and the IP addresses they receive - perhaps they can tell you which account had the IP address at the time, but with all the free ISPs you can make absolutely fake accounts as they never check anyway. Even if the provider is aol, the first month (ie pre billing) you get people using false names and addresses to abuse the free trial period. |
