Thunderbird Address Book Problem

I have a problem with TB intermittently "losing" the address book. Whenever I open the program the address book is there but after sending a few messages it drops out. By closing and restarting TB it comes back every time but it ain't half frustrating. I've searched the Mozilla forums but can't find anything on this particular problem. Any clues anyone?

I would:

export the addr.book to somewhere safe,
de-install Thunderbird,
download and install a flashy new copy of Thunderbird
import the addr.book from somewhere safe.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try when I'm feeling sufficiently courageous. First I'll need to figure out how to back up my Quicktext files.
