Getting in the Game--Advice Please
 

I've just acquired a PC on permanent loan and want to cease being computor illiterate. I can fumble my way through E-mail and websites and that's my lot. Can anyone please recommend any particular book(s) that start from "Plug in to electric socket" and lead me on from there? I don't think I want to do a lot with a PC but there again I don't really know just what I may be able to do with this set-up. A few games would come in handy,too,if I knew how to put them on! PS I have no instruction book for this lot at all.

Try the local library, see what they've got. If you're cashed up, have a look in local (big name if possible) book shop.

The 'dummies' books are pretty good, there is also a good series that use big colour piccys of what you're (supposed) to be doing.

also, there are probably heaps of usefull (free) sites on the net that will step you through everything.
(try searching at somewhere like www.metacrawler.com for 'learning computers' etc etc.

If you're up and running with email and pprune, there really isnt much else you could possibly need anyway :))))

You might want to take a look at the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) on the British Computer Society site <http://www.bcs.org.uk> or the ECDL site itself <http://www.ecdl.com>

The ECDL is computer competence certification. It is based on a logbook (which you can buy from the BCS for £25) and you have pass a test for each of seven modules (Principles of IT, Operating System, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentation, and Network Services ie. e-mail & web browsing). The tests cost £5 each and when you pass a test, it gets stamped into your logbook. Once you have passed all 7 modules, you get a Computer Driving License (if you pass any four modules, you get a "Starter" Computer Driving License).

The ECDL is not difficult, but neither is it trivial - once you get your license, quite a few companies will recognise you as computer literate.

There is a book called "ECDL - The Complete Coursebook" by Brendan Munnelly, ISBN 0717129608, Published by Gill & MacMillan at about £17. I think it's being reprinted at the moment, but should be available during April - try Amazon. Or there are quite a few colleges in the UK where you can do it in the evenings.
