Win98 users profile...help!!
 

Quite a while back I installed Win98 on a mates machine. During the install Win98 asked for. .a name and company name - I inserted a not so flattering nickname in the box.. .It has now become a problem - the nickname is apparently appearing on the top of faxes . .that he is sending, not sure what program he is using,. .Can anyone tell me how to remove or change the info that I originally entered??

Click on Start, then Run, then type in "regedit" (without quotes). Then expand the folder "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", then expand the subfolder "SOFTWARE", then expand the subfolder "Microsoft", then expand the subfolder "Windows", then open the subfolder "CurrentVersion" by clicking on it. On the right you will see in the Name column the entry "RegisteredOwner". Beside it you will see a regretted entry. Double-click on "RegisteredOwner". Change the highlighted data value to something preferable and ok the change.. .. .So your user name is TwoDogs, eh?

Nothing, TwoDogs. But you posted a question about unflattering names and, prompted by your username, my mind wandered to that joke about unflattering aboriginal names, the punchline of which begins with "Two Dogs". . .. .I liked the Kai Tak pics.

I have been wanting to do the same with my XP registery and with very little modification, Brian B, those instructions worked a treat. Found the bits I needed to change under Windows NT and current version. Thanks

BB,. .I gave my friend your detailed instructions which he guaranteed me he followed to the letter (he is Irish tho') apparently to no avail. The offending nickname is still there.. .Any other ideas. Unfortunately we live at opposite ends of HKSAR and it is a "cut lunch" to go visit him otherwise I would go over and take a look myself.

BB yes, I know the joke well tho' I got the name when I was in the ME and looking for a nick to use when chatting.....I wanted something Aussie and 2dogs lemonade came to mind.. .. .Re the problem, my friend now tells me the nickname is permanently on view, at the bottom of the screen next to a small key......any help.

TwoDogs, tell him to run regedit as per previous instructions. Then, from the Edit menu select Find. Type in the nickname. There can be a space in the search string if the nickname has more than one part. However the search string must be exact. Then he should record the location of all of the occurrences. There should be a key such as F3 for finding the next occurrence after the first search.. .. .It should be safe to change any of these to the desired string but my preference with the registry is to make one change at a time, save, and see what happens. That is why I suggest that he simply record at first all the locations. Let's see what's there before telling him to make any changes.. .. .Another suggestion is to download the following clone of the UNIX grep utility.. .<a href="http://www.btinternet.com/~hmillington/grep22setup.exe" target="_blank">http://www.btinternet.com/~hmillington/grep22setup.exe</a>. .This will search many files at once for a particular string. Run that program, click on Search, type in the nickname. Here the name might be split into first and last names so just search for one of them. Click on Next, then set the directory to C:\Windows, then Next, then in the Custom File specification, type *.ini , click on Next, then Finish. Grep will search all ini files for the nickname. It may appear in Msregusr.ini or profiles.ini or possibly someplace else. Let's see where.. .. .The grep utility is shareware. Your friend doesn't sound like a programmer so he probably doesn't need it longterm. It can be uninstalled after this use.
