Just received a virus in my email. It came as (you guessed it) an attachment to a vague message from my brother. Apparently it was an open page from one of his word documents. Fortunately my ‘VET’ stomped it before any damage was done. The message from my virus program read .. “File c:\wndows\temp\Billmind.exe was infected with Win32.Magistr.24876 virus” Yup its still around …so off to the Symantec site I went. Here is an extract from the Symantec virus info site…. Due to the increased number of submissions, SARC has updated the threat level of this virus from 3 to 4. W32.Magistr.24876@mm is a virus that has email worm capability. It is also network aware. It infects Windows Portable Executable (PE) files, with the exception of .dll system files, and sends email messages to addresses that it gathers from the Outlook/Outlook Express mail folders (.dbx, .mbx), the sent items file from Netscape, and Windows address books (.wab), which are used by mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express,. The email message may have up to two attachments, and it has a randomly generated subject line and message body. For the rest of the story go to …. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/[email protected] I’m posting this as a reminder, as this is the first time I’ve received a virus in my mail. Also I always open my mail off line as a precaution to prevent further spread of these worms should my virus checker fail. Next time, as has been said by previous victims, I will delete anything I’m unsure about and/or check with the apparent sender first.
