Which is a good motherboard?
 

I have decided to finally bite the bullet and come out of the so called dark ages and ugrade my computer.
Since most of the bits are fairly new, as regards being replaced over time due to failure/frustration or just the fact it was on special at the computer shop, I figure the only thing I really need is a new motherboard (and CPU obviously)

Since there are many choices available, is there a general concensus as to the best around taking into account value for money/performance and upgradability?

I like ASUS MB's. Really stable boards.

Asus are good, so are ABIT

Yup Asus and Abit tend to be a cut above the rest - but Gigabyte are good for value and aren't too far off in quality terms.
I was always against using Jetway boards (as I thought they were cheap and rubbish) but I tried one (The Jet830Ultra) and was very pleasantly surprised. Had onboard sound+graphics, but also had an AGP port and plenty of spare PCI slots so you could add the best sound and graphics gear without too much bother.

Tried a "gigabyte" but the internal bus transfer was too slow for (example) a good tv tuner card.
Swapped it for an "A-bit", which is much better.
Wish I had got my hands on an ASUS with DDR.
Oh well, perhaps next-time....

Have a look at Tom's hardware ( see link ). Best board out at the moment is the Dragon+.

Don't forget Intel. Not that cheap, can't overclock 'em, but stable as hell and surprisingly good support with BIOS upgrades and problem-solving.
