Erasing/'FDISK-ing' an NTFS formatted hard drive

I'm using Win2000 and have converted my hard drive to NTFS format from Fat32.

In the past when I wanted to erase the whole hard drive, I used FDISK. However, my copy of FDISK doesn't recognise the NTFS directory, erasing only the Fat32 directories.

Can someone tell me how to 'FDISK' an NTFS directory/hard drive?

Sounds like you have an old version of FDISK. Your choices are to acquire a newer version of FDISK (the NTFS partitions will show as non-DOS, not NTFS) or simply use format from a dos prompt. If using format, make sure that you boot with a bootable floppy and not the DOS in Win2k as this is driven by the o/s and will cause problems as the o/s eats itself whilst trying to execute within the dos shell.

Fubaar,

Poke around on the installation CD for W2K. I am sure that you will find a copy of FDISK.EXE there that understands NTFS.

Whenever I've had trouble deleting NTFS partitions I use "delpart.exe" which is a MS utility, and will remove troublesome partitions.
If you do a search for it, you'll probably get a download somewhere, if not I can mail a copy to you <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
