Word 97 opens documents twice

OK so I've loaded Office 97 on my new computer. Opening documents using File/Open... or drag-n-drop is fine, but if I try to open a document from Recent Documents or by double-clicking it in Explorer, Word tries to open TWO copies, then gives me a snotty error message such as "This document is already in use" ...

Used to work fine on my old computer and also on my laptop. I've never seen this behaviour before, but it's bl**dy annoying.

Anyone got any clues ?

Windows 2000.

Now you come to mention it, first time I've tried to run Office 97 on 2000.
