Need some web space for a little project

I have a little back room black budget skunk works project on the go and may need about 5mb of webspace somewhere to house scanned pages of text for download.

Can anyone offer me:

Advice on how to bundle 100´s of scanned b&w exam papers (format, download etc.)

The requisite server space

Cheers,

ps you ain´t seen me, roight?

Well, you'll have to scan the exam papers into a computer, then save them as a file.

These could then be uploaded (by FTP) to a webspace.

Or you could scan them, etc and compress them so that they take less electronic space and can be downloaded from your webspace by visitors.

Hope this is of some help but feel free to e-mail me with any more questions.

Regards,
Darren

http://www.idrive.com

50Mb of free on-line storage. Store any images as .gif files for the best quality / file size compromise.

If you want to store text, and don't mind a little bit of extra work, then an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program can convert them into Word documents. This will save LOTS of space, and you could add any corrections, notes, etc., easily.

Drop me a line if you need any help.

Also www.freewire.co.uk will give you 10mb for free, Need to set account using their phone access number. However you can FTP from anywhere using an FTP program.

Have you looked at www.homestead.com ?

Depending on how good the original copy is you could try using OCR software to convert scanned copies of the papers into text and save that way. We do this in our office with good results if the original copy is clear. A trick that we've tried is zooming the scan before converting. This reduces the number of recognition errors in the text. Should get you well inside the 5 Mb limit especially if you put compressed files up for download.

Thanks guys. OCR is out as there is handwriting etc.

Pilot-Lite, I look forward to seeing you, at the moment you are scheduled to be my student!

Thanks chaps. I will post a link to the finished result. An anonymous server in somewhere like Tuvalu would be ideal...

There are 2 PC´s for students with internet access. There should be more and there will be over time. You can get by without doing cold turkey!
