Win XP CD-RW's not recognised properly!

Hi Guy's,

Sorry but it's me and my endless problems coming to terms with XP and its vagaries again.

I have all my photo's and documents backed up on CD-RW's which generally work fine, within the known XP constraints that you can't erase anything on them unless its the whole disk.

However for the second time in a month the computer has suddenly decided to read each CD-RW as being full, but with total disk capacity of only 4 to 12 mb (their all 650 mb). It prevents me writing, or over writing any further data unless I erase the CD and start again.

As I would like to keep some data on the disk and not on the hard drive this is a bloody nuisance.

Searching the MS known issues produces similar but not identical problems, to which Microshaft have replied that it's a known problem and their dealing with it. Great ! <img src="mad.gif" border="0">

Any ideas, or similar problems? I would be grateful for any views. I know that I could use CD-R's for less cost, but some data is changeable each week and the RW is better for me.

Thanks, as always in anticipation.

Have similar problems, first the system wouldn't run with the cdrw software installed as its not compatible. So pay $45 for new software and now it works when it feels like it! MS say there is no problem or it's the manufacture's problem depending on the day of the week, the time the moon phases, etc!!!

In a similar thread I frequently have problems ready / writing to a floppy disk - gives error code that didk isn't formatted then refuses to format it! This occurs with new, old and prerecorded floppies!

And I had to replace my scanner! So all in all XP was my **** buy of 2002!

Are you using XP's own built in software for this or a specific package?. .I am, so far, using ROXIO 5.1 reasonably successfully with XP although I have had problems reading and writing to CD-R's set up using DIRECTCD from an earlier version (ver3.0 I think). I believe there are some versions of ROXIO that cause problems with XP.

Easy CD Creator, free upgrade for XP compatible version (for registered users), works perfectly.

I m using the same Rioxo software too... problems as above. Also had to pay for my upgrade for CD Creator!

I use Nero and have had no problems using/ writing/ deleting CD-RW discs with Windows XP. I didn't even bother with the inbuilt functionality after early trials suggested it was lousy.

As an aside, UDF CD-R/RW support in XP is woeful and if I want to read a UDF disk I have to resort to booting in NT4 or 98 and manually copying the files onto the hard disk for XP to see them.

Thanks for the replies, but whatever the problem is it lies within the way the disk is being read by XP.

I have looked under 'my computer' properties and Nero 5.5 and both tell me that a 650 mb CD-RW containing around 600 mb of jpegs is full and has a total capacity of only 4.25 mb!

The only way I can resolve this is to wipe the disk and replace all data, which being an RW is done at 4x and takes forever.

I see the same properties for the disk regardless of whether it is in the CD writer or the DVD drive.

I had so many problems with XP- i decided to go back to Windows 98, which gave me a chance to start off clean and by loosing all my old drivers I downloaded the latest updates- and my machine is running perfect.....

Now- lets see how far a XP CD can travel through real Space................

Sorry if I'm going slightly off topic here:

I am currently running WinME. When I try to copy music onto a CD via Media Player all I get is the response 'No CD recording devices found'.

Can't seem to make any sense of it, I've checked all the connections, re-installed the software, but still no luck. Anyone out there with any ideas, or suggestions as to what I should do?

Cheers

As previously posted, I returned an Iomega CD-RW to Dixons as unfit for purpose as XP refused to allow it to run as it might cause instability in XP.. .Never liked the childish microsoft approach to operating systems, but what's the choice.

Maybe oneday they and others in the industry will get their act together.. .Meanwhile my approach is not to waste my life grappling with problems they generate.

Aviation analogy.

OK passengers, there is the airplane. Somewhere on the airfield, or perhaps another airfield there are some steps which will allow you to get into the plane, go try to find them. To help you here is a partial plan of an airfield, not necessarily this one.
