Firewalls with XP
 

XP comes with an optional firewall but how good is it?. .Will it do the job or should I download Zonealarm or buy Norton or whatever.. .If I did, would it interfere with the XP firewall?. .I haven't seen any useful info on this important subject and would appreciate opinions.

I've got to admit I didn't trust Microshaft's Firewall, so I run good old trusted Zone Alarm Pro.

I am just in the process to investigate video and audio problems on XP machines while having a direct connection with other machines on different operating systems. . .All problems disappear as soon as the built-in firewall is disabled. Hope to know more on Monday, ZoneAlarm will run on this machine to see how that cooperates....

By the way...even the XP-built-in MSN Messenger is creating trouble. Removing and installing the latest one from the Bill Gates emperium solved this problem already.. .Looks like more glitches will surface as deeper one tries to dig.... <img src="mad.gif" border="0">

Anyhoo, I have used Zonealarm and the MS firewall, and havent noticed any problems with Internet applications, but on the security side, you may try this site when running the XP firewall to get an idea of what is protected, I havent had the chance to do so. Zonealarm comes highly recommended

Just to add, I would think you should only run one of the aforementioned software packages at a time, and Norton Internet Security is another that comes highly recommended, although Zonealarm is free, and NIS is not.

The XP firewall is enabled and disabled via ;

1. right click my network places on the desktop &gt; select properties. .2. right click your internet connection &gt; properties. .3. select the advanced tab &gt; add or remove the tick in the firewall section

I am running XP with five different ISP's but using BT as default.

I have disabled the XP firewall on all of them and run Zone Alarm 2.6.362 free version without any problems except that to get my Medion PC to stay in standby I have to shut down ZA first.
