W95 start-up problem

When I start my computer I get a box popping up titled 'Internet Logon' - 'some of your internet programs require that you be logged on to windows ....etc...OK/Cancel'
Could someone be kind enough to tell me how to permanently get rid of this? Many thanks.

Does this happen in "Safe" mode?

When it says Starting Windows 95.....
press F5
Select "Safe" mode

If it doesn't then I'm thinking you've installed a new program recently which is doing this. If so, go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and select the program.

It is quite likely that is is a program you have installed that is in your "Start up" directory ( i.e. it loads automatically when the machine boots up ) and is looking for a web connection.

Try and work out which program it is, and go into it's settings and stop it from trying to connect of it's own accord.

Or you could remove it from the Start Up folder so that it stops loading on boot up altogether.

Or it could be the "Windows Login" thingy, which is a pain in the bum, and is to do with having more than one user to a PC so it can save personal settings. Go to the Microsoft website and see if you can find a solution in their Tech net section.

Hope the above helps

Bingo

P.S. Sometimes Windows 95 gets itself in a right pickle, and the way forward is to do a nice clean rebuild. The other option is to upgrade to Windows ME, which is quantum leaps better than Win 95 ( and 98 ) a lot more stable, and more user controllable.

WDTBD & Mark - Thanks for taking the time to reply - much appreciated. This does happen in 'safe mode' and followed the installation of a new version of I.E. from a new ISP, which I have since stopped using. I have looked in the start-up menu and am not sure which programme to uninstall and so am wary of causing some serious damage. It's just this box that pops up. It does not automatically seek an internet connection.

I would be grateful for any other thoughts, as it's really irritating. (I have tried a search on Microsoft.Com, with no luck) Thanks again.

The only thing further I could find was the following article :
http://support.microsoft.com/support...S_MSPSS_gn_SRC H&SPR=W95

( the above URL appears to be too long to work in here. Copy it too your clipboard and paste it into a browser window. Make sure there are no spaces in it and it should work )

The registry is where all your system settings are stored. When a program is installed on your machine it adds entries into the registry. The article says that you should be able to stop the pop up coming up from there ( which makes a lot of sense to me )

BE CAREFUL...... read the help files mentioned in the link first, and make sure that you write down what things were before you change them.( so you can change them back if you need to )

Don't be scared about changing registry settings, just be methodical.

This is the danger of running "free" ISP software on your machine I'm afraid, they try and "help" you by changing lots of things, but then don't give you way back.

It might be time for that fresh rebuild. If you bought your PC from a high street shop it probably came with a disk that will take your machine back to factory settings. If not, you need to read up on how to format your hard drive, and re build your OS.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but this is about as far as I can take it without being sat at the machine myself.

I will keep an eye on the thread in case you need any more help.

Good luck
