Can anyone advise me on use of my laptop in South America. Should I use my European provider or is there a suitable local network to keep the telecoms charges down . Also have the option of mobile link, is this effective.

On the road, I use software called GRIC, obtainable from Gric.com
You have to have an isp, with user name and password, acceptable to GRIC. But then you simply enter the country and city in the software and you are offered a local number to access the web. Works for me. ;)
