If using Windows XP and IE7, check your script settings (in IE options/security), as it is likely they have been altered following an auto-update (if applicable) to SP3.

Check the "posting rules" box at the bottom left of a thread page, are smilies On?
If not check your profile

Wader2 9th May 2008 08:08

Bottom left of the main screen is a status window "Posting Rules" which lists the rules such as vB Code is On, Smilies are On, IMG Code is On, HTML Code is Off.

Then when you click reply, as I am doing, you will find a window "Additional Options"

Under Miscellaneous Options you will find:

Automatically parse links in text and
Disable Smilies in text.

make sure that the parse links is TICKED and Smilies is UNTICKED

What OS and browser are you using? (Consider using another browser?)
What security programs? (Clutching at straws a bit, here.)

Thanks all

:D:DI ran Advanced windows care V2 from Cnet:} and it appears to have fixed the problem.Probably a corruption in the Registry.
Way beyond my capabilities, over 58 and self taught.

I should not be allowed near a PC unless accompanied by a teenager:confused::)

Tarq57 9th May 2008 23:27

Well done.
Yep, it's a pretty good wee program, that Iobit. Just make sure you keep a backup if you fix any registry issues.AWC is one of the safer reg cleaners around, but any reg work should be backed up.
Know what you mean about needing a teen to work a PC!
