Thoughts about IBM
 
Well, a little pointless, but i am looking for some info...

I have had an IBM for 3 months now, and have had no issues what so ever, things run smooth and things run fast.

I had to reboot my acer, hp and dell each three months as they just got so clogged up they ground to a hault, or weird things happened.

So my question is...

Do IBM do something special to Windows to make it run like it should do?

I am really impressed with it all, except, the screen is rubbish, not very bright and poor colour reproduction when working with intense colours.

In a word, No.

Any machine you get with a preinstalled OS on it will have various add ons/bolts on and other stuff with it. I tend to wipe these machines and install my own customised build but then I've been creating custom builds for over five years.

I suspect the IBM laptop just has less preinstalled crap than the others.

Don't know if it still holds true but all IBM machines were manufactured by Tatung some years ago.

Whatever, I doubt IBM manufacture anything except possibly the badges.

IBM sold its Personal Computing Division to Chinese firm, Lenovo, in 2005 and no longer makes desktop or notebook personal computers.

Planecrazy, have there been no Windows security software or other software upgrades in the last 3 months that required you to reboot your computer?

Have you installed the same software on your IBM that you have on your acer, hp and dell ?

Have you got the same amount of data on your IBM that you have on your acer, hp and dell ?

Have you been using your IBM as long as you have been using your acer, hp and dell ?

For the above, and numerous other reasons, there are no grounds to your statement :
IBM do something special to Windows
Unless properly managed, Windows can, will and does get clogged up after an extended period of use. At 3 months old, your IBM is still a baby ... well just :cool:

I am sorry, when i say reboot, i mean wipe clean, and start again...

I have installed all the same software, and a few extra bits and bobs, and done the usual install and uninstallation of software that looked good and turn out to be junk.

All the same habits, downloads, internet, etc. Use the same avg and firewall.

I can put my fingure on it, but i have experienced no deteriation in performance.

And the build quality is top too, i have dropped it, and is goes in my uni bag each day with no second skin, i totalled my acer in 9 months, and my dell in 6, so far, 3 months and just solid and fine.

On comparison, they are around 25% more than a dell for same spec, so maybe you do get the build quality you pay for?

I used my laptop for a good 10 hours per day, install something probibaly at least every other day, it gets good solid use from personal use, study use and then i use it to freelance.

Maybe it is down using it differently, but i cant see what i am doing differently, if anything, i use it more.

As for pre-installed stuff, there is a fair chunk, alot of security stuff, and software for the hdd protection, and bio-metric, and secure chip. I have 67 running processes, which is way more than my acer had, a fair few are IBM.

I am just currious, as i am after another laptop, and dont want another headache solution, however, this IBM i have is great, but the screen is poor for colour and outdoor use, its more a business machine.

So i have been looking at a different IBM/Lenovo or MacBook Pro...

Hope i can get a few quid for my current IBM as its got just under 2 years warrenty left.

67 processess is insane. I'm running one of my custom build XP's right now and even with some remote control tools and firefox I'm running 39 processes.

I'd be interested to see the list of processes - There is a too called PSLIST which will let you list all the processes into an easy cut-and-paste form you can post here.

Also, Have a look at what launches at startup via the startup control panel tool -> http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
This is an invaluable tool I always keep with me.

I have received a lot of help with my Thinkpads from the Thinkpads.com forum (independent -- not affiliated with IBM or Lenovo). You might check that out. You will see similar display complaints there.

As i say, usually all this crap would see a deteriation, but none at all.

I am surprised, and now considering if i should stick with lenovo on my next machine...
