Sony RDR-HX525 dvd/hd recorder

I'm hoping this doesn't stretch the forum rules too far....

I have a Sony RDR-HX525 dvd/hd recorder which is rather less than user friendly and the instruction manual seems to contradict itself from section to section.

What I can't get it to do is record from either my VCR or video camera in playback mode. It has L1,L2,L3 channels in addition to the tuner channels, with L3 being the stated channel for such activity. Trouble is, L3 is not available when I start either of those machines - it only becomes available when it sees a signal from the freeview decoder.

I'm lost! Any thoughts?

Can you connect the VCR into the same socket (scart) that the freeview is currently connected to? Maybe the L3 is seeing that input position.

Too late now, but isn't the received wisdom "avoid Sony"?

I came close to buying a Sony box last year, and was firmly warned off.

I have a Sony HD 560. Best bit of kit I ever bought. Have you tried their helpline or the nearest Sony centre?

You might have told me before I bought it !

I have indeed connected the videos to the same SCART, but the L3 doesn't appear. Even fired up the freeview (and then turned it off, but the option still remains) to get the display 'right' but the screen and the HD recording remain blank.

Excuse my ignorance but why should this be Keef?
