Online Backup/photo storage
Anyone got any recommendations for free online storage/photo backup? Am looking for around 5gb (seems to be the going free quantity!) and the ability to upload whole folders rather than just one file at a time (Microsoft's skydrive for example!) Primarily for photos at the mo so will accept solutions that only store photos, but longer term would just prefer storage!

Doesn't Google have that facility? Try Picassa 2.

Picasa gives 1GB free, or 10GB for $20 a year. I use the version of the Picasa Web Albums program that allows me to upload to my web gallery directly, even a folder at a time.

It may be a bit overkill but for £4.50 a month you can get 510gb of storage at http://www.servage.net/
|
Have gone with mediamax in the end, from handyandy's article, cheers for that! 15gb of storage, but only 1gb of upload per month, so slowly slowly catchy monkey. The software has a bug or three, and the upload is pretty slowwwww
But 15gb for free! Happy |
If you have a look at www.adrive.com you'll find what you're looking for; they offer 50gb of storage, and you can upload folders as well - and it's all free. I have an account and it works very well.

Is it completely free, just had a look at the site and couldn't work out if it's for a trial period or not.

Not bein a kiljoy but why not just use a backup HD?
I have a 100GB 2.5 inch HDD inside a USB2.0 IDE box and a dual USB conection cable. Simply plug in BOTH USB plugs (gives better xfer rate of 12mb/sec depending) and open Windows Explorer. Select C drive and highlite the folders in the RH column you want saved and then right-click em. Holding right-click butten down drag the folders you want saved to the backup HDD (usualy E or F drive) in the LH column and the files will copy (not move) to the backup disk. Im constantley updatin and backin up me 95.34gig of porn files. Its a simple bloodey method and all over in about 13 mins of xfer. And I dont need to go online to recover me stuff if my C drive sh!ts itself- just another puter! And not just pics/movies but Program File backups, Setup files and just about anythin else. Of course if your after online storage so OTHERS can view your pics/whatever then Photobucket is the way to go. |
There is another advantage of an off-site backup in addition to your home backup - recovery in case of fire, flood or theft.
Irreplaceable data - such as photos - should have 3 copies at any one time. E.g. local online, offline and offsite. Or disk backup, CD/DVD and offsite. Don't forget that overwriting a backup set with current data effectively puts 2 sets of data at risk simultaneously! :uhoh: SD |
And I dont need to go online to recover me stuff if my C drive sh!ts itself- just another puter! |
Alvision thats true, which is why its a good idea to purchase a
new one every 2 years or so. External HDs are reasonabley cheap. Yep fire/flood/theft/etc is a good reason for online backup (I was merely sugesting an alternative) but dont forget the URL! |
Exactly, I keep a copy local on my external drive, a copy backed up on DVD and a copy now online to cover me for fire/theft etc as I frequently take my IT setup on the move with me in the same car, so was a little uncomfortable having it all together. Thanks for the replies all! Still hunting for a decent NAS though!
