Apple reveals mighty Mac Pro

Just a week before Macworld, Apple has unveiled a Mac Pro with eight processor cores and a new system architecture. Apple said its two Intel 45-nanometre Quad-Core Xeon processors running up to 3.2GHz will double the power of its predecessor. The new Mac will possess a 1600MHz front-side bus and up to 32GB of 800MHz memory. It comes with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card with 256MB of video memory.

The standard 8-core Mac Pro will cost $2,799 (£1,400).

Caution - the Apple server seems to be struggling with demand for the movie sections. Not unexpected - even the most hardened skeptics will have to pause before normal glowering is resumed. It's even got an 80 gig hard drive and 2 gigs of ram. Ultimate pilot/road warrior machine?

A couple of other very interesting launches if your interested in wireless back up/wireless base station and print server all in one box for multi machine house holds. Also a totally standalone hdmi 720p TV box to plug in the old plasma. Both work with Wintel also.

If it was available for purchase this week we'd be buying one in NY.

I want one. (as usual). I've just bought the macbook 2.2Ghz and it's brilliant. However, the 1.8Ghz at half the weight is soooooooo desirable. :ok:

Finally got the tour movie downloaded and the oversized trackpad looks interesting. It's taken on all the gestures from the iPhone/iTouch and added more.

You just swipe sideways though docs, photos and web pages. Expand and contract text sizes pinching your fingers and rotate objects with a twist.

For 499 bucks plus local sales tax the Timecapsule with an ethernet wireless base station, print serving and a terrabyte of storage looks like a good choice for the Towers with 5 macs and one PC to try and be sensible with. I live downroute and can back up the delinquent family's digital dross remotely and access the printer's diagnostics when they've stuffed it again.
