measuring Mb/s to/from pc

When using laptop via 3G mobile, I got clobbered with Vodafone data charges as my antivirus automatically updated itself with umpteen Mb.

I could disable the antivirus and/or I could update it just before my travels, but I would like a utility (preferably free) to allow me to see what the typical data volumes are for the antivirus updates.

Any suggestions?
