Capturing film clips from the Web
 

Whilst reasonably computer literate, I am completely stumped when it comes to capturing a clip of video from the Web.

In this particular case i want to take a small clip of film that is on YouTube and incorporate it in a presentation - obviously with credits to the poster and from whence it came.

However I have tried everything I know but to no avail!

Firstly, am I breaking any rules by attempting to download it? After all it is in the public domain.

Secondly, any comments and ideas would be most welcome!

There have been a few threads about the technical aspects of copying such a file to your hard disk - searching on You Tube in this forum should locate them.

As regards copyright - this is a minefield! You are possibly talking different jurisdictions, with probably different laws. The nature and type of content may also have a bearing on whether copyright applies.

I am certainly not qualified to advise you, but I believe that the uploader of the content would probably be the holder of the copyright, so a message to them might elicit the permission you require (I think that each uploader can be contacted via youtube). But it could also be that the conditions of using youtube allow youtube to jointly or solely own the copyright. And there are certainly loads of clips (e.g. of tv shows) that the poster is almost certainly NOT the copyright owner!

I don't think that it can be described as "public domain" simply because it is freely accessible over the internet, btw.

I am convinced that the 'poster' could not have taken the clip because the submarine was moved shortly after the clip was taken and it was obviously taken from one of the five British helicopters there.

I use the audio only version and find it works well. My only gripe is that being free (which the video version isn't after the free trial period) it has a Google search box and associated buttons that can't be removed from the toolbar (this is why it's free; sponsorship via the search box whenever it's used)

RealPlayer Beta allows you to copy YouTube clips.

There is a plug in for Firefox that allows you to copy Youtube clips and the like.

The Firefox plugin is called Download helper. It's a honey.Installs to the browser as an add-on, very painless. You will then need either a player that can play .flv files, or a converter to change them to something your main media player can handle.
I'm using Bitcomet's flash player, which also requires Adobe's shockwave flash for internet explorer is installed.

I now have the clip I needed. The person who posted it responded to an email and sent me the following links which worked like a dream (once I had translated the DownTube page from Spanish!)

Once I had the clip I had to change it from .flv format to an acceptable format using AVS Video tools which was simplicity itself!
