I switched off all Windows Updates a long time ago. My system has been a lot more stable since then.

That is SUCH a silly response. You can't possibly imagine that you've sussed out the solution to MS updates.

When I bought my current XP SP2 computer, one of my first actions before going online was to turn off updates.
