DVD drive problem

Hi Folks

Hope some one can explain why I have this problem
I have a sony vaio desktop with xp that has seperate cd and dvd drives.
When I put a new blank DVD-RW disc in the DVD drive, it thinks for a while with a tiny disc symbol but when I go to 'My Computer, F drive' it says Free space 0, Total space 0. So of course I cant use it !!

The blurb says its a '-' DVD and the blank DVD are -rw so can anyone point me in the right direction?

Is the drive compatible with DVD-RW? not all are!
