Shutting Down?

Been having a problem with my mouse pointer just disapearing from the screen requiring a reboot, with no mouse pointer I cannot call up the task manager to shut down or shut down in the normal way by clicking on shut down or restart, all i can do is hit the reset button,is there no other way of shutting down XP ? because it seems to take forecver to reboot after a reset,it wants to boot into safe mode run scan disc ect.
Not a big problem, twill probably be solved by buying a new mouse, but the thought struck that there shoul be some other way of shutting down that does no require the mouse.
