Computer does not hook up to internet
 

My computer was working fine and now is not able to "see" the internet. My cable modem and router are fine since my laptop is able to access the internet and get emails but not with my desktop which has the ethernet cable from the router directly.
I have used system restore to go back to yesterday (last time it worked fine) and still no dice.
What can I check to troubleshoot and find the culprit?

And the operating system is?

Win XP is the operating system
Never had a problem with accessing the internet like this until now and have been using this computer since I bought it over 2 years ago.

OK, let's start at the bottom and work up -

Is the LAN card disabled?
Is the LAN cable connected correctly at both ends?
Do you have a link light on the router port?
At a command (CMD) prompt, type IPCONFIG / ALL - what do you see?

Don't know how to tell whether disabled or not. Just the day prior to sending the message for help everything was well.

Is the LAN cable connected correctly at both ends?
I am assuming you are talking about Ethernet port. There is a cable from cable modem to router and then another goes from the router to the computer and it is connected fine. There is a light on the computer where the cable hooks up and there are the following lights in the router:
Power / Status / Wan / WLan / Local Network ports 2 and 4
Also, the computer indicates "local area connection is now connected. Speed 100.0 MBPS"

Do you have a link light on the router port?
At a command (CMD) prompt, type IPCONFIG / ALL - what do you see?
There is lots of things but I will try and write what "I think" may be pertinent and if there is something else you need, let me know.

Can you copy and paste the ipconfig here? Right click the command window, you can then Mark and Copy the text.

IP Address / SUBNET Mask / Default Gateway /DHCP & DNS Servers, etc

would be helpful, actually. That would tell us stuff like whether the PC has found a DHCP server or not, which would be a good place to start.

Don't know much about computers but I had this problem the other day after a very short power cut. I swapped USB ports and everything then worked OK.

I don't know how to copy and paste since:
1) under the DOS c:\ , etc. using a mouse to highlight to copy I cannot do, if you can tell me how to copy and paste under DOS it would be much appreciated.
2) in addition, there is no way that even copy and paste would work since I am using a different computer to send this since mine does not access the internet so I don't know what I would copy and paste to to get here except I guess to a CD.
Maybe I will try and go back and write everything down and type it as unless someone let's me know how to do it easier otherwise.

I also tried to creat a new connection but that did not work also.

Well, that looks like the PC has plausibly found a DHCP server, which I assume is in your router, which has handed it useful information.

The only obviously curious thing there is the private address, on a different subnet, for the first DNS server.

What do you get with IPCONFIG on the laptop that's working?

Agree it looks to be working but the DNS Server Subnet looks dodgy.

Try the following:

1. Start
2. Control Panel
3. Network Connections
4. Right Click on Local Area Connections
5. Properties
6. Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
7. Properties

The screen that comes up has two tabs. There are 3 settings (IP Address, DNS Server Address, Private IP Address) - are they all set to automatic?

As noted by others, all looks OK except for the 192.168.1.9 DNS server entry.

However, as 64.245.166.16 is the second DNS entry, it "should" contact that if the first is unobtainable. Of course, if the 192.168.1.9 responds on port 53 (DNS) with duff information, then it wouldn't go to the alternate.

What happens when you ping 127.0.0.1? You should get 4 replies.
What happens when you ping loopback? It should resolve to your [computername] on 127.0.0.1 and get 4 replies.
What happens when you ping 192.168.0.102?
What happens when you ping 192.168.0.1?
What happens when you ping www.pprune.org?
What happens when you ping 213.161.73.143?

Out of curiosity, what happens when you ping 192.168.1.9?

That lot checks basic IP connectivity and DNS name resolution.

If that all works, then the problem is in the browser - next lesson!

On the "ping" - it goes too fast and I can hardly even read the first line much less the rest. Any way to slow it down so I can read and type on my laptop to send?

The only "ping" that seems to give me plenty of time is ping www.pprune.org which gives me a black screen with nothing on it.

Was able to ping 192.168.1.9 which it ran slow and I was able to copy - all others are too fast.

Then it has another line or two but too fast that I can't make out what it says.

You should first open a command window - Start, Run, type CMD then you'll have plenty of time to see what is on the screen.

Very odd that the laptop configuration has 192.168.0.1 as the DNS server. I can only surmise that the router is forwarding the DNS requests to the real DNS server.

What is the router?

The router is D-Link Model DI-624-AirPlusXtreme G- wireless router. It is only a few months old and has worked fine so far.
