How do I save vidoes from You Tube?

Not so sure its so easy to save a youtube video as they are streamed in flash, and flash is not so easy so save in some cases, like the youtube one. I used a screen capture utility, set the record area to around the video and recored it, it out-putted in AVI and could be set PAL or NTSC. I wish i knew what it was called, i got it off downloads.com, it was highly recommended by the editors so shouldnt be to hard to find...

1. Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View (tab) > Show hidden files & folders > apply > OK.

2. Start > My Computer > C Drive > Documents & Settings > User (whichever one you are) > Local Settings> Temporary Internet Files > (right-click) Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

3. Clear out Temporary Internet Files, after locating via above (less to sort through when you come to para.5, below).

4. Download/play requisite You Tube (or any other Flash type) video from website.

5. When complete, go to Temporary Internet Files, via Desktop shortcut, and look for .flv file. Copy to another location, i.e., My Docs.

6. Download FLV PLAYER 1.3.3 from HERE (wont play in Window's MediaPlayer).

7. Go to ‘file’ in player (top right) and navigate to saved file in My Docs, or wherever; self launches video.

NB: when running, put cursor over moving picture to bring up zoom options (top left).

If, like all sensible people, you're using Firefox as your default browser, there's an extension that makes saving these files easy.

You'll still need to download/install Flvplayer as per BST's instructions.

Things might change to allow downloads now that it has been bought out by google. they will hopefully make it similar to google video so you can download files directly. there is nothing worst than finding a great video only to have to keep having to watch it online wasting bandwidth in the process.

After downloading the .flv file, use CinemaForge (free download)- great programme for converting.flv or other files to more common video files, such as .avi, .mpeg, or.mov (quicktime) files.

As has been said there is a "Video Downloader" plugin for firefox which sits as a little movie and disk icon in the bottom right of the browser, click on in when you are on a page with a movie you want to watch and download - open with flv player.

Similarly this works on all video sites or indeed any site with an embedded video that you can't normally download.
