Help required re external hard drive

I posted some weeks back stating that my parents' lap top (Acer) didn't have enough capacity (hard drive) to deal with digital video.

I have purchased them a 250Gb external drive but I'm now totally confused :confused: :confused:

Does the software needed for the videoing work (Nero & Sonic DVD) get loaded onto the new drive (if so, how?) or does it remain on their laptop's hard drive.

Sorry to sound so dim but I just can't work it out?:sad:
