XP Stops Responding at shut down
I have searched the forum for this problem but it appears that no one else has had this issue yet...
When I try to shut down my XP Home edition PC, it gets as far as the "Saving your settings screen" and then hangs. I can not even ctrl-alt-del from here. If I want to shut the computer down, I have to hold the on/off switch for 5 seconds. Microsoft are useless as usual. They list the symptoms exactly but their proposed cure does not work: 1- Remove East Asian Language support 2- Turn off the welcome screen 3- Get the latest service pack and updates. I have completed all 3 of the above but still no success. Can anyone help me please? |

BOAC, thank you thank you THANK YOU! problem solved. The link to the patch that cuts off user links to various applications (1) was the one I needed but along the way, I found a handy bit of software (2) which has resulted in my PC running noticeably quicker. All in all, a great day at the office! Oh, I did search (honest I did!) but I reckon I was entering too many words to get the results I needed
(1) From BLUE SKY THINKER http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en. (2) From frostbite http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3120-...eck&tg=dl-2001 :D (edited to repair the links) |
Glad it is sorted, zedex - perhaps you can pop round and fix mine:)
BTW, your links are not working. As I don't have edit rights in this forum I cannot see where they have gone adrift. |
:ok: I've fixed the links now.
The registry software (am I allowed to say which one I bought?) examines your PC and produces a list of applications that are started when windows starts. By searching the internet to find out what each one does, I was able to uncheck a box beside each one that I don't want to run and from now on, every time I start up the computer, a lot less memory is used up running these pointless things in the background. |
(am I allowed to say which one I bought?) Cheers SD |
In that case...
"PC Doc Pro 3.5" Cheers |
PC Doc Pro 3.5 is no doubt excellent, but pricey at $30 a seat!
"The registry software....examines your PC and produces a list of applications that are started when windows starts. By searching the internet to find out what each one does, I was able to uncheck a box beside each one that I don't want to run" Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel does exactly that and costs exactly nothing. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml Of course PC Doc Pro has a Registry cleaner and various other goodies (but freeware equivalents aren't that hard to find on the Web). Mac :ok: Edited to add: Mike has a few other neat little tools available for free on his site - Clipomatic is one I use. |
