Windows not shutting down
Hello All
All of a sudden my computer is not shutting down. It gets as far as the blue screen saying "Windows is shutting down" and then goes no further. I then have to shut it down by holding the power button down, otherwise it just stays like that for hours. (Once the whole night!) Does'nt do it all the time-but more than 50%. Any ideas. Don't recall installing anything new of late. |
Try one of the free registry error checkers/cleaners.

Basically you go to Task Manager and terminate some resident programs launched, then try rebooting and hope for an improvement. Reiterate with a different set of programs. Tedious? You bet.

Here's a link to the MS Win XP knowledgebase for windows shutdown problems - several possible causes to have a look at.

Mine does that sometimes. I use an easy fix - I press the BOB (Big Off Button).
XP doesn't seem to mind - it is stable enough to reboot normally next time. |
Mine does that if I have the DVD burner plugged in; so I never boot up or shut down with it connected. Windoze mirrors life itself; sometimes its best not to ask why things happen, just accept that they do. :ugh:

-There's your problem. :D |
I had the failure to shutdown problem for a long time on my laptop. It was more likely to shut down if I waited until (nearly) all disk activity stopped.
Then I found this Microsoft KB item: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315664/en-us Shutdown has been 100% successful since turning off the power management on USB root hub. |
