Problems with paypal
Hello all,
I have never been able to access paypal from my home computer. When I go to pay for something from ebay it goes into the 'this page cannot be displayed' bit. I always assumed this to be a glitch with the cranky old install of windows 98 at home. This weekend I updated the machine to windows 2000, but the same thing still happens. I am unable to get into the login section of paypal. I think that this is something to do with the https: extension on the beginning of those particular pages. I have no problem getting into paypal from work (naughty naughty!) or even from the public library. Is this a tick box option somewhere in my settings? Help gratefully recieved, N. PS I should mention that my copy of windows didn't necessarily come in a sealed box. PPS Yes, I am using explorer |
noisy,
When you "Updated" to Win2k did you do a Fresh Install or an Upgrade? Take Care, Richard |
I used a 2000 upgrade disk over the top of a new install of 98. Is this significant?
Regards, N |
noisy,
Is this significant? I would do a fresh install of Win2k and see if you still have the problem. I am sure the problem will go away. ;) Take Care, Richard |
So this is some kind of hangover from windows 98. Oh well, better get a proper copy of windows 2000 then.
Thanks, N |
WIN2K is installs in a different directory from win 98 - usually in a folder called WinNT so I'd doubt the problem is with the OS.
Are you using IE 6.0? (I.E 5.0 is buggy and not supported by some https sites) If you are, have you tried changing all the settings of IE back to default values? (and then closing and re-starting the browser to see if anything changes). And have you tried it with a different browser, like Opera? hth Charles |
Charles,
When you do an upgrade, you get all the Win98 Settings, and I think the problem carried over. Take Care, Richard |
I had huge problems with using AOL and Paypal via a LAN at home - cure was to change the MTU and RWin settings.
Yes I know I shouldn't be using AOL but SO uses it and won't change! HTH JC |
Richard,
Their site uses XLS, which doesn't work well with IE 5.0 Can't see how my suggestions would hurt anything - better than a drastic fdisk and reload. Charles |
I will have a go at downloading the latest version of explorer - probably at work as I am only on a dial up modem at home. I don't fancy installing a different browser at this stage.
Thanks, N |
Abandon IE. Go to the Mozilla site and download Firefox 1.0.
It's faster, more reliable, and less prone to hacking. I've never had any problem with Ebay or Paypal using Mozilla or Firefox. |
Charles,
Nod. I see where you are coming from now. :ok: Richard |
Hi All,
I can now confirm that I have tried IE6 and it works just fine. However, within a couple of days the PC contracted a virus which kept redirecting me to a search engine that the perpetrators wanted me to use. How annoying. I then tried firefox in conjunction with an install of zonealarm and all has been fine since. Thanks, N |
noisy,
What did you do to remove the Malware from your computer? Take Care, Richard |
I haven't been able to shift it. I've got adaware and spybot and they didn't help. zone alarm at least denies the malware access to the web. I'm still working on a solution.

noisy,
Download Hijack This! and post the log file here. Do NOT make any repairs. (Hijack This! pulls up everything, including programs that are supposed to be in your computer.) Take Care, Richard P.S. When you post the Log File in this thread, make sure you put a check mark on "Disable Smilies in This Post" |
