DVD Disks
 

I'm looking at making some DVDs (now i've figured out how) but need some good, relatively cheap disks. Was looking at these for a first go at it?

Does it matter what disks I get really?

If you're anything like me, those cheap disks will be a very good idea. When I first started making DVD's, I screwed up a fair few. If they only cost a little, it won't be too bad. Once you get used to it, then consider buying better quality ones.

Along those lines, I found getting a couple of R/W DVDs to use,until I got good at it, was a real bonus (I learned the hard way about making small, round table mats when I first started burning CDs!)

If you need good quality cheap disks go for ritek ones. Most writers are compatible and they are usually good quality. Have a look here for some more prices.

The only problem with going too cheap is that you may well be able to author and write to the dvd -r but half the time the dvd player won't like them. Go for the G04, 24p each can't be bad, jeez I remember when they were over £2 each.

Also beware that if you have an 8X or 16X dvd writer, doesn't mean the faster the better, you may well get better quality at 4X or even 2X, I know I do.

Went with these in the end.

Just arrived and have got stuck into burning my first DVD...

All was well until I played it - no sound! Except on the lovely menu i'd made of course.

It's an MPEG which I put through TMPGEnc to encode, and then used ULEAD DVD Movie Factory 3 to birn onto disk.

All is fine except the sound... any idea what I could have missed?

Ignore that, i'd encoded an already-encoded file...duh.

Just to keep all my newbie-DVD (backup) questions under one thread...

Is there anywhere/way I can find out where on the movie the scenes start from? Obviously I have a legitimate copy of the film but I wish to make a copy with a new menu, and want to insert scenes in the various places.

I could just watch my legit copy, but that's no fun :E

Nerovision will do it also ulead dvd factory and spruce up, I would image most editing software will allow it.

First of all thanks to Richard at NAC for a reply to a related question I asked on another thread.Here's another one - just bought a Double Layer external DVD recorder which says it will work best with USB2.0 - may not work so well with USB1.1.How do I know which I've got? Tried an audit with Belarc Adviser but cannot see a result there.

If the drive is connected to a USB1.1 Port, Windows will popup with the warning, "you have a high speed device connected to a low speed port".

Now, if you have the specs on your Motherboard, I can tell you if it is USB1.1 or USB2.0.

Yet another DVD burning problem!

I'm backing up a (100% legit) version of Notting Hill. Ive got the film as a .avi on my laptop and have encoded and burnt it using DVD Santa, however after a few minutes the Video stops with the Audio carrying on!

Any ideas whats caused that?

Does this happen during playback on your Notebook, in another device or both?

If it is just your Notebook, have you tried selecting another chapter to see if you can get audio off of other parts of the DVD?

Happens on both the lappie and the DVD player... aswell as the desktop and the PS2.

I burnt another copy of it and success, I have audio and visual, all the way through! Only bummer is I have a nice green stripe along the bottom of the screen taking up about 1/6th of the picture!

Richard, thanks for the all the help thus far, hopefully you can sort out what i'm doing wrong!

I've figured out that the lovely green stripe has come from the Audio_TS/Video_TS files created from DVD Santa.

I have the film as a 583MB .avi file. Everything i've tried has failed (in one form or another!), and im one failure away from wiping it! What is the best way to go about getting this .avi onto a disk of 4.7GB?

There's no problems with the playback, the player is reading the file correctly, the problem is coming from the writing stage.

I normally convert .avi files with mainconcept mpeg encoder to DVD mpeg2 files then use TMPGenc dvd author or dvdsanta

Think your problem could be with the compression that’s used in .avi files for the audio, there is a program that will uncompress it but cannot recall the name of it,

Nero will do with the vision express add on. As long as it is a valid avi file. What can make it invalid is the way it is encoded, normally the problem is the audio encoding is at the wrong setting, a lot are done at (if I remember correctly) at 44.1khz when it should be 48. You can reencode with tmpgenc.

Also has the file been encoded at NTSC rather than PAL or vice/versa this can also cause problems.
