Adding a SATA drive
Any reason why I can't add a SATA drive to an Intel D865GBF motherboard ? The board should support 1 SATA drive if I enable it in BIOS.
Looking at the Maxtor offering as I have used those drives for years with no problems. I have just got into TV cards and some Internet radio. Video editing is proving to be a bit of a problem and despite having a Maxtor 7200rpm 120Mb 8Mb cache drive where all of the media is stored, it is proving to be slow. I already use both IDE interfaces to the full - hard drive on each as Master drives and a CD-RW drive on each channel as Secondary drives. Current system is ; Motherboard as above 1Gb memory 2.4GHz Pentium 4 CPU OS : Win2000K Pro Good to see that more manufacturers are starting to make 8Mb cache as default now - I have found that it makes a big difference. Not sure about the increased 7200rpm -> 10,000rpm. I've tried to source a SATA 10,000rpm drive with 8Mb cache and had some rather strange looks ! As an aside any ideas why my FSB speed is showing as 133MHz on this Motherboard when it should be 512 I think ? As always, advice much appreciated. LL34 |
Lost_luggage34,
I run a pair of WD Raptor 10,000RPM 8Mb Cache SATA Drives and their performance on RAID 0 is impressive: http://www.naples-air-center.com/DAoC/wd_raptor.jpg Maybe those looks you got were envy. As for hooking up SATA Drives, you should have two SATA interfaces. The speed of your RAM is DDR266 which is 133Mhz accessed twice per clock cycle. Take Care, Richard P.S. I switched from Maxtor to Western Digital when the JB line of drives came out. I have not thought about switching back since. ;) |
Thanks Richard - as always.
Pretty damm impressive. My Motherboard only provides one SATA interface. No issue in using that in addition to the two IDE interfaces ? Thanks LL34 |
Lost_luggage34,

Thanks for that Richard. I obviously misread the Motherboard manual.
Will have to rethink my options now ! Don't think I want to go down the RAID avenue, but an option I guess. Do you see much difference with the 10,000rpm drives vs. 7200rpm ? LL34 |
You don't have to install 2 drives, you can install 1, it will effectively act as a normal drive without being an array.

Lost_luggage34,
You have two SATA Ports, but that mobo does not have RAID on it I am sorry to say. :( Just one drive on a SATA Port will do just fine for you. :ok: Take Care, Richard |
