No Web Access but Broadband working fine

I cannot connect to the internet on my Dell home computer (Windows XP). All connections and the Broadband NTL modem have been checked.

I've done a system restore to a date when I know the computer was working fine. However, I still cannot connect to any web sites and get "page cannot be displayed" response.

I've been away for a few days and don't know if the kids have done anything.

Any ideas what to check gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Of course, getting Firefox may be tricky ;)

What happens if you open a terminal (Start -> Run -> cmd) and type

ping www.pprune.org

if that fails, how about

ping 213.161.73.143

Does XP have an IE 'repair' option under install/remove progs? Might be worth a go.

I find that if you can't connect, cleaning up the temporary files to stop IE showing you the last stored page is the first step, and then go to CTRL PNL and right click the LAN to your modem and select 'repair' get's me back on track to getting on line.

switch off your firewall and try again....

oncemorealoft,

In Internet Options:

Go to the Connections Tab then set Dialup to Never Dial a Connection then click on the Lan Settings Button and put a check mark in Automatically Detect Settings.

Take Care,

Richard

Thanks,

It turned out to be something quite simple. For other users of the PC(my kids) their IE continued to work so I compared settings and remembered that at some stage on an NTL help line an agent had suggested using a proxy server. This no longer appears to be working so I swithed it off and lo and beholdeverything was fine.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.
