Windows font size - the saga continues

Everything is now in Old Person Large Type mode :(

I went to Display in Control Panel and set the size to something a wee bit more manageable. It did make things a little more Steely Eyed Fighter Pilot but the desktop is now bigger than the screen so half the stuff disappears off the edge  and I have to scroll all over the place to see it all.

Any ideas on how to set the font size to something small without making the display area bigger than the screen?

Is this telling us something about your surfing habits?

"It appears that you're looking at p0rn again. Windows has automatically increased the font size"

No I'm staying away from porn at the moment. It took too long to rebuild my pc.

I had a similar problem the other day. Perhaps it is the same and I can pass my new found knowledge onto you!!

For starters, open your web browser, click on "View," scroll down to "Text Size" and choose something a little smaller.

Try it. It's somewhere to start I s'pose!

If you have a new mouse with the little wheel in between the 2 buttons, then holding down ctrl whilst rolling the wheel will change the font size in some applications - IE for example.
Have you done this by mistake?

Onan the Clumsy 13th July 2004 23:40

Look at that. You're right :8

That's not the problem though, I just wanted to make the letters smaller without making the desktop bigger. I tried changing control panel/display/settings/screen resolution on another XP pro machine today and it worked just fine. Now matter what size I made the font, I could always see all the task bar, from the Start button to the clock in the icon tray.

On my machine, if i make the font smaller, the task bar is about twice as wide as the screen. It's driving me nuts.

You aren't by any chance using a laptop or a flat panel display?

They have a "native resolution", which is the actual number of pixels in the display (1024x768 for instance). Some displays re-sample higher resolutions to fit on the actual screen, some don't, and you will then have to scroll the screen round to see everything.

Also, check these:

Right click the desktop, click Properties and go to the Appearance tab - check that the Fonts drop down is set to Normal

Right click the desktop, click Properties and go to Settings, Advanced and check that the Display DPI setting is at Normal (96dpi). That's what's on my WinXP box - CRT running at 1024 x 768 x 32bit.

One Twenty Two "Is this telling us something about your surfing habits?"

I just figured that one out :E

SS Tried it, but it didn't do it

StickyB Tried that too, b ut it wasn't the one - pretty cool though, must be linked in with Accessability

Pilot Lite Yes, it's a lap top...but it never used to do this before I rebuilt it...

...wait a minute, I think I have a clue here Watson.

SD Tried both of those too, but to no avail.

Stand by, I have an idea. It's crazy...but it just might work.

Onan the Clumsy 15th July 2004 20:13

I did it!

There was a Dell disk with drivers on it. I ran the update for the video driver and I'm back to normal now - well it's a little bit small, but I can fix that.

btw, I love the ctrl + roll the wheel. :ok:

Thanks everyone.

Onan the Clumsy,

Tell us what Vid Card you have in that comp and I am sure we can come up with more updated drivers than that old CD you used. ;)

Take Care,

Richard

Mobility Radeon (I think)

Naples Air Center, Inc. 16th July 2004 21:51

Onan the Clumsy,

If you have a Notebook with a Radeon on it, then your only option is to go to the actual Notebook maker's website in order to get the latest Drivers. ATI, does not publish any Drivers for the public to download on their Radeon Mobility Chipsets.

It would be worth checking the website of your Notebook maker in order to get the latest Drivers.

Take Care,

Richard
