Extracting .ISO files
 

Hi all,

Does anyone know of freeware that will extract .ISO files, as I want to run a programme but can't find a way to open it.

.iso is a compression format for disk images (usually on mac osX or linux). If you can open it, it will open as a disk image.

Have you tried Googling for "extract iso (file OR files) freeware" ???

isobuster might do it for you: www.smart-projects.net/isobuster (Click the "freeware" button when it starts).

I understand what you are saying, but when a simple search with Google or similar turns up the answer, one has to wonder why the poster didn't just do it themselves.

Given that they have an internet connection to access PPRuNe, there are only 2 reasons - laziness or ignorance.

A sticky FAQ with "Have you tried Google" would address the latter.

There are many times when one can't find the answer on Google or a support site or indeed anywhere - these are the occasions when people like yourself are invaluable.

I agree with Mac and Osbo on this one.

To use a motoring analogy, not everyone is a gifted mechanic, but to call in the cavalry before even looking at the handbook is a bit ummm... lazy?

In most forums I am with you, but with this forum there are all different degrees of computer users, from the PC Power User all the way down to the lowly MAC User. ;)

I just prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt the first time around.

Sorry Richard but I'll stick to my guns here. If you can get onto PPRuNe you can ask Google a question. And you don't usually find beginners extracting files from isos.

OTOH it did cause me to pick up a couple more apps for my rainy day collection....

There is, if I may suggest, a third point. Google is a wonderful tool/resource; however evaluating the results can sometimes be a bit of a pain -- this is where somebody who knows what their looking for can do the job far more effectively than somebody who doesn't. I don't mind spending a few minutes googling for somebody when I know I can (probably ;) ) analyse the results quicker than somebody who doesn't :)

What does irritate is when the same question has been answered a few posts previously :hmm: The temporary non-availability of the search functions doesn't help (but that will be fixed sooner or later.) More tricky is knowing what to search for (which kind of brings us back tothe Google point above.) I guess an answer is the mythical FAQ :rolleyes: . But that's for another thread.

Our posts crossed. I wold humbly submit that you can Google effectively precisely because you know enough to sift the result :)

Okay RTFM, fair point - I concede.

In answer to Jingly's original question the only piece of FREE Windows software that I have been able to find is ExtractNow - http://www.extractnow.com/

I've just tried it and it works well. Not as flashy as Isobuster or UltraIso but does the job. :ok: And a voluntary couple of bucks Paypal donation rather than around $30 for the others.

Now in Linux...... :E
