startup programs
I suggested somebody else post this question, but I'm happy to do it.
People say go to msconfig and remove all those programs not required, but in msconfig there are lots of applications which by their name give no hint of their use. So, in essence, what are the essential programs, the only ones that need to be in msconfig to allow Win XP to run properly? |
NAC, aka Richard, has previously suggested www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm as a useful source of info on this :ok:

Although this article is Windows 98/ME specific, its attached list is very clear and comprehensive. Certainly useful enough to decipher a lot in my XP.

Hi all,
This is the one I use.. http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php Just use the search facility. You'll see one of these letters appear in the status column. "Y" - Normally leave to run at start-up "N" - Not required - typically infrequently used tasks that can be started manually if necessary "U" - User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary "X" - Definitely not required - typically viruses, spyware, adware and "resource hogs" "?" - Unknown Cheers Liam |
