pprune

Time for some serious maintainance. This site is becoming unuseable and very slow to access/use.  :} :bored: :{ :( :yuk:

LME (GOD) 15th January 2004 22:09

Maybe the only maintenance needed is on your own PC. I have a dial-up connection and the pages load just fine...time for a trip to PC World maybe???:O

Evanelpus 15th January 2004 22:16

I have to agree with upperecam, the pages are taking a lot longer to load than they use to. Don't think it's my PC, I use the one at work and it's a sooper dooper one.

GrantT 15th January 2004 22:20

Do you even look at the forum your posting in?

safetypee 15th January 2004 22:32

No it’s not a rumor, Pprune has slowed up during the last few weeks; many more ‘server busy’ messages.
Often slow even at 512 kbps broadband; apparently with 500+ on board. Update required to cope with A380 !

BUMPFF 15th January 2004 23:08

Thanks, MJ. I appreciate your problems and thank you for your efforts to maintain the system.

Q: What's wrong with Internet Explorer? (I'm only semi PC-literate).

upperecam 16th January 2004 00:56

Thanks a million for the info. As for GOD, well just not worth my listing my Porsche of a system for the sake of such an ignorant reply. Grow up Mister or is it Miss?

:D  :} :ok:

BOAC 16th January 2004 01:37

UEC -as PPT has said, a lot of work is going on to upgrade server capacity BUT IT TAKES MONEY. PPrune does not run for free. All mods 'do it for free'. In many ways it is a victim of its own huge success. It does help to avoid the time zones PPT mentioned.

Danny and the team are spending a lot of effort and time overhauling the 'system' and hopefully getting a better capacity.

I've only made a few posts
so I don't feel the need to
order a Personal Title and
help support PPRuNe

This is where every little helps!

Earl 16th January 2004 01:48

On broadband myself with the same problem.
Not only pprune but hotmail too.
Installed Netscape to use for my browser, works much better than Internet explorer.
Not a computer wiz but this worked for me.

bagpuss lives 16th January 2004 02:46

Maybe those here complaining about how slow the site is should stop complaining and do the decent thing by digging into their own pockets and ordering a snazzy personal title? ;)

That'd help lighten the financial load associated with running and maintaining this site for which we all pay absolutely nothing.

ATC Watcher 16th January 2004 03:52

Spot on Niteflite...
by the way what is a " lightweight, tabbed browser ?"
In the ols days we all had Netscape, but now every PC comes with Explorer which seems to be faster. . is there an alternative ?

BahrainLad 16th January 2004 04:02

Safari is the browser you need if you're running OS X, Opera or Mozilla for any other platform.....

PPRuNe Pop 16th January 2004 04:04

As PPRuNe Towers has said, a lot of effort is being put in to sort the problem. It IS true that PPRuNe is a little slower. I am suffrin the same problem, and it is very frustrating, but do rest assured that the Towers are top of it and I think you will see a big difference sooner rather than later. Takes a helluva a lot of money to keep the site running too.

Please be patient. Your favourite site will be all better soon! :ok:

As far as IE is concerned, we have stated often enough that a change of browser will be of enormous benefit. I now use Opera and it is good - well better than IE I can assure you.

BTW, my broadband is still opertaing at 576kbps.

Memetic 16th January 2004 04:27

Try ghostzilla for work

This one:

http://www.ghostzilla.com/

is very good for anyone who needs stealthy PPRuNe viewing at work. :D

It hides the browser in another application such as your word processor and disapears completely with a mouse flick.

digidave 16th January 2004 05:05

I read pprune a lot.
I enjoy pprune a lot.
Slow downloads frustrate me a lot.
I have ordered and paid for a personal title, I've done a little bit to help.

If you have put up nothing to help maintain the site you have no right to complain. Put up or shut up.

Sorry if I sound angry but an awful lot of people on pprune sound like my 13 year old son who seems to think that he has a right to everything he wants.

Danny, Rob and all the Mods:
I have had great fun on pprune for free and I'm more than happy to put up a bit of dosh. Thank you very much!!!

You can download the netscape browser from the following link. As mentioned before, it is a tabbed browser therefore you can have lots of websites loaded at once. This helps reduce the apparant effect of slow connections etc because when one website is loading or refreshing, you are reading one of the other websites in the browser. I find it great for reading both pprune and my emails at the same time.

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp

I have also found it more stable that internet explorer which had a nasty habit of crashing ( particularly when I was writing emails).

Couldn't agree more with niteflite01 and digidave. I might mutter to myself when I get the bugga off, too busy signal, but it would take a special cheek to demand something be done about it while contributing nothing.

With that in mind, a special mea culpa, a big thanks to those responsible for the enormous amount of work involved in keeping a site this big running, and a commitment to join the ranks of contributors as soon as I find out how to do it.
:ok:

bagpuss lives 16th January 2004 06:04

Good man / woman binoculars!!!!! :ok:

Now come on - how about the rest of you people who are complaining about the speed of the site digging into those well-filled pockets of yours and contributing something to the great team behind PPRuNe who donate their time and effort for free?

As the Moderators here have said - every little bit helps espeically when it comes to server upgrades and things like T1 internet access.

And you get a nice, unique personal title for your dosh too - how's about that for bang for yer buck? :p

This is a great, well maintained and unique community that we're all lucky to have free and ready access to. It's time to show that little touch of appreciation and help keep the site as smooth as it always has been.

BlueEagle 16th January 2004 06:15

I've used IE6, Netscape7, Opera and Mozilla but the fastest, smallest browser by far that I have found is at http://www.flashpeak.com scroll down the left side to Freeware and you will see the Flashpeak Slim Browser. It has a layout similar to IE but many other useful features too.
As mentioned have given all the above browsers a fair go on a high speed connection and on a 56K modem and so far the Slim Browser beats them all. No, I don't have shares!:D
