"the source file cannot be read"
Since reinstalling XP Pro due to it 'loosing' my cd drives, I have had a message popping up when I try to download a PDF or mpeg file from various sites telling me the source file cannot be read. and if the problem persists, to contact the system administrator.....
Any ideas please, is it a product of XP, or Netscape7.1, although both were working ok before christmas... TJ |
terryJones,
With the .pdf, did you load Adobe Acrobat Reader? Try opening Windows Media Player first and see if you can open the .mpeg from inside WMP. Take Care, Richard |
Hi Richard.
I have acrobat, but the problem is not opening the files already on my drive, I can do that, it is actually Downloading them from the net that it will not do:-( TJ |
terryJones,
It could have to do with your Permissions. You might not have the rights to read the files. Try right clicking on one of the files and going into Properties. Then click on the Security Tab and make sure you add yourself to have permission to access the file. Take Care, Richard |
Hi Richard.
Thanks for the comments, but I fear I may not have put it clearly enough. The files are NOT in my pc, they are files I wish to download from the Internet. This is why I wondered if the problem was related to Netscape 7.1, but all seems well in the preferences. It may well be a matter of permissions, XP thinks I should not be downloading these files, so it stops me. I have NO idea where to look for this sort of problem though:confused: Bring back Win 3.11. I could find my way round that..... Terry |
Terry,
Now you are clear. Do you have a link to the file you are trying to download? Can you download other files from the internet? As a test, try to download these files:

Hi Richard.
I can load the first and third files, they both start mediaplayer as soon as I click the link, and I can play as soon as enough is downloaded and bufered. They only seem to save to a 'temp' file, not as I used to have it, the download would ask where I wanted to park it. The mpeg and adobe ones however produce this error message:- c:documents\terry\local \temp\5pojp3jv.mpeg could not be saved because the source file could not be read. Try again later or contact system administrator. The pdf one produced the same message, apart from the file name/extension, q11a850n.pdf Thanks again for the time and trouble Terry  |
