Solid State memory types.

Having recently bought a digicam which uses SD memory cards, I did a general price check - SD appears to be between 75 and 100% more expensive than CF or SM. Why???
It does the same job, no better or worse than the others so,
a: Why so much more expensive? and
b: Why would any designer specify it in preference to CF or SM?
TIA

Cornish Jack,

Here, across the pond, they all run around the same price. I did a quick scan of prices at an E-Tailer:

Memory (Flash Memory) Capacity [128MB]

Take Care,

Richard

Thank you, Richard.
Obviously, it pays to be your side of the pond. :(
Have just done another check and one of our on-line retailers does 128 CF and SM at about 20GBP while their SD is about 30. At least the % split is narrowing but why should there be ANY difference?........ anyone???

Market & restrictive licencing forces. CF is older & larger so is cheaper. Tends to have larger memory sizes available earlier & cheaper as a result Some of the others are smaller. A premium is paid for size reduction. Other's such as Sony is proprietary so you pay extra to use their format due lack of competition.
