XP Shutdown (again)

I was having a struggle getting XP to shutdown within a reasonable amount of time. I had searched around a bit and found some web sites dedicated to this problem, but none of the solutions appeared to work.

Then after a while I discovered (as you do with these niggles), that the shutdown problems only occur if I have left a CD in the drive.

Eperimented a bit and it seems a normal shutdown takes about 35 secs, but if I forget to take the CD out it takes 4mins 38 secs every time. It does'nt seem to make any difference which CD is in the drive or whether the drive is used or not.

The solution is obvious (take the CD out), but its becoming a bit of a pain if I finish work late at night, forget, and then have to wait nearly 5 mins before I can crawl into my pit.:hmm:

Anybody got any idea's?

AMD3000+ 512MB, 160GB
A7N8X2.0
ATAPI CD RWX52
SONY DVD RW

Nero 5 is installed, but disabled for startup (enabling nero check does'nt help).

Might be an application not shutting down, try enabling auto shutdown, see here.

You can also amend your "WaitToKillAppTimeout" and "HungAppTimeout", see here. The only constraint that you must follow is to make sure that the HungAppTimeout is greater than the WaitToKillAppTimeout.

WARNING!!: The above involves playing with your registry - so make a system restore point before messing about with it.

Super Stall,

Try running with just one optical drive on the Secondary Controller and see if it still takes 4 minutes to shut down. If it shuts down in 30 secs then try with just the second Optical Drive on its own.

I am wondering it there is a compatibility issue with the two drives working together on the same controller or if it is an issue between nForce and one of the drives.

Take Care,

Richard
